Students are able to synchronize their Microsoft Live email accounts with almost any Apple iDevice.
From the home screen, select Settings.
Now select Mail, Contacts, and Calendars.
Select Add Account.
For the account type, choose Microsoft Exchange.
You will now have to enter your username, Microsoft Live password (not your university network account password), and your email address. Press Next when your information is populated.
Leave the Domain blank
Description can be however you want to know this account. For example, "USF Student Email"
After you hit Next, you'll be asked to supply the server information. Enter m.outlook.com.
If you've successfully authenticated to the server, you'll be asked which items to synchronize with your device. These can be turned off and on at a later date.
Press Save and your account will now be synchronized with your device. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your inbox and/or calendar.

I just added an article which has the instructions for Android devices. I haven't had a student with an Android device, but I'm pretty sure these instructions are close to step by step.
This was super helpful! Just FYI, you have to be connected to wifi for it to work. Also, sometimes your most current password for USF is not the password you use for the microsoft exchange account. Instead, you use your previous password. I am not sure why it does that but it does.
